Introducing the Fathom This Discovery Matrix™

Published on

We’ve been measuring something most schools still can’t see: not rankings, but whether institutions appear at all inside AI-generated answers.

As AI-powered tools like Google AI Overviews and large language models increasingly shape how students explore colleges, discovery is happening before a student ever clicks a link. Institutions are summarized, compared, and implicitly recommended, often without visibility into how or why.

That gap is what led us to build the Fathom This Discovery Matrix™.

Why We Built This

Most institutions still evaluate search performance through traditional SEO metrics: rankings, impressions, and traffic. AI-driven search breaks those models. Students now ask questions like:

  • Which colleges offer strong programs in X?
  • How much does it cost to attend Y?
  • Which schools have good undergraduate research opportunities?

AI systems answer these questions directly, synthesizing information across sources and presenting institutions as part of a narrative rather than a list.

We needed a way to measure that reality.

What the Discovery Matrix™ Measures

The Discovery Matrix™ breaks AI-driven discovery into four measurable layers:

  • Visibility — whether an institution appears at all
  • Program coverage — which academic areas are surfaced
  • Competitive presence — how institutions appear relative to peers
  • Authority alignment — which website pages AI systems trust as sources

Together, these dimensions reveal not just if an institution is visible, but why.

What Surprised Us

What surprised us most wasn’t which institutions appeared most often. It was why they appeared. The schools performing best in AI-driven search were not gaming the system. They had built clear, comparable sources of truth—especially around cost, financial aid, academic experience, and outcomes.

AI systems reward clarity.

What This Unlocks

By making AI-driven discovery measurable, institutions can:

  • identify invisible programs
  • defend visibility against competitors
  • strengthen pages that already function as trusted sources
  • align content strategy with how AI systems actually work

This is not about chasing algorithms. It’s about building institutional clarity.

What’s Next

We’ll be sharing more findings, case studies, and insights derived from the Discovery Matrix™ in the coming months. If your institution is asking, “Are we visible in AI search?”, this is how to answer that question.
